Starting with the definition of dietary supplements, dietary supplements are intended to add to or supplement the diet and are different from conventional food (via www.fda.gov ). People take these supplements to make sure they get enough essential nutrients and to maintain or improve their health but some may find it very risky as it may interfere with nutrient consumption or cause side effects.
Now of course, these dietary supplements may be vital to one with problems with nutrient consumption and that is very understandable but it also has many benefits for a person with no problems as well. The pros include: providing nutrients you can't get from your diet, increasing your level of nutrients if you have deficiencies and supporting wellness/fitness goals, helping with medical plans.
But too much good can turn out to be bad, The cons include various side effects such as an upset stomach or allergic reactions, and it may interact with other medications (so please contact a doctor before taking supplements if you are already on medication!), may not be backed up by science therefore being ineffective or worse, may not be necessary as if you already have a balanced diet theres no need to take more supplements and it may be unregulated therefore please do lots of research before taking a certain supplement! Overall, with research and my personal opinion, I think before taking any supplements at all get a doctor's check-up or at the very least do research online to see if you truly need it because the side effects may not be worth it. Please remember to keep a balanced diet and always make sure your health is your number one priority!
